Renewing vows, welcoming a child, celebrating a friendship, marking the anniversary of a death, saying goodbye to a beloved animal, honoring the end of a career or a professional transition, celebrating a recovery… Each of these moments carries within it the crossing of a threshold.

Creating a ceremony or ritual, even a simple one, gives us a way to mark that transition. It allows us to acknowledge what has happened, and move forward. These moments invite us to look back at what has been accomplished, while opening a door to the future.

For example, to celebrate a friend’s 40th birthday and the crossing of this milestone, we created a rite of passage and gathered his community to witness a series of symbolic gestures. At the heart of the ritual was his desire to bring together his two worlds: Geneva and the Pyrenees, the land where he was born and the land he had made his own. We mixed soil from these two places in a single vessel, creating a unique ground of his own—one from which he can continue his journey, free to plant whatever seeds he chooses.
